Play Vocabulary

Act
One of the major divisions of a play. The subdivisions of an act are called scenes.

Aside
A short speech given by an actor on stage that the other characters don’t hear – it represents the character thinking to himself. It’s just a short monologue.

Dialogue
Conversation between two or more characters in a play.

Monologue
A lengthy speech given by one character, like an aside only longer.

Soliloquy
Another speech given by one character, revealing his inner thoughts – by a character who is alone or who thinks he’s alone.
